EAR CROPPING

Although some people may choose to leave their Doberman puppy un-cropped, it’s still always a matter of preference. Looking for a Vet to crop ears shouldn't be left up to the buyer. Any good reputable breeder will already have or know a vet or two who does ear cropping regularly. The ears are usually cropped between 7 to 10 weeks of age. The puppy should not be too old or it becomes more difficult for the ears to stand.

There are three common lengths and styles of cropped ears.

-Long (show crop) this crop is the longest and much narrower than the other two crops, much less base or bell. they can take a very long time to stand and still may be floppy at the tips..

-Medium (working/pet crop) bell width can vary. a very nice look

-Short (military/pet crop) short in length with wider base/bell. they may not take a very long time to stand.

The longer the ears, the longer they will take to finally stand. Persistence with taping is the key to success with your pups ears, and remember to never let your puppy sleep on un-taped ears.

Approximately 12 hours prior to surgery, the puppy must be kept from eating or drinking. The Veterinarian puts the puppy under general anaesthetics, then proceeds to remove the excess ear on the outside back edge portion of the ear. The operation takes only about 30 min.

The ear is cut on a traced design, and then the edges are stitched, splinted and bandaged. Now that the ears are splinted and taped to their upright position leaving the stitched edges exposed (a special technique) to the air for healing, the puppy can go home the same day.

Its very important to leave the splints on for a week, then take them off for half a day to breath and dry, then re-tape them. Always remember to clean the ears when you take the tape off, also before re-taping check for sores and odours. You can use peroxide to clean the stitched side of the ears. Infection can set in quickly if you do not keep ears clean and dry.
The stitches are removed after about 6-8 days. The amount of time in weeks it takes before a puppy’s ears will stand is variable. It could take several weeks to several (3-6) months. The longer the ears are left untapped, the longer it will take for them to stand.

When the time comes for re-taping, some puppies will hold still better when they are sleepy and some puppies don't care much at all and will stay still just fine. The ears should be examined everyday to make sure they are healing well and their is no smell. When all stitched edges are totally healed, the ears can be taped all the way around for quick and easier tapping.

Getting a puppy's ears to stand properly requires time and commitment on the part of the new owner. If any problems arise it is best to contact us for advice or a very experienced veterinarian. You will find that most veterinarians, have no or very little experience at cropping and taping ears.

Always remember this one thing; if the pups ears fall after removal of tape, make sure put them right back up the same day.
